brethelm Musicians can work a lifetime and never achieve writing that 1 great song. Wax Idol's Hether Fortune & co. wrote 5 of them on Happy Ending. "Crashing," "Scream," "Belong," "Heaven Knows" & "Mausoleum" are songs that you'll have playing in your car 3 years from now on a roadtrip with a friend & they'll be like "Who is this?!" "Scream" - I have headphones on as I'm writing this. Go on and listen with me. At the 2:45 mark, doesn't that emotional outpouring of Dylan Thomas give you goosebumps? Damn. Favorite track: Scream.

steveinsocal "...Neatly seguing with 2015's "American Tragic", this album sees the band develop their complex expansive, post-punk sound interwoven with dark, gothic undertones which heighten the brooding, disquieting, semi-autobiographical lyrics..."

Heaven Knows 03:57
Through the horror That you've attached to me What's hidden there beneath The deception of your smiling face I see Things you could never see Hear whispers on the breeze No redemption here, so graceless I went looking For ways to kill the time Something that's locked inside But you broke into my mind And heaven knows What you've done Still you think That you've won The angels know You by name And they hang their heads in shame Cuz heaven knows Hail, Narcissus in a pond Reflection is turning green Take your bitter, blackened heart Far away from me You & all the snakes you charm Hissing at my door - Find another witch to burn Cuz I've been here before And heaven knows What you've done Still you think That you've won The angels know You by name And they hang their heads in shame Cuz heaven knows The angels know You by name And they hang Their heads in shame Heaven knows Heaven knows Heaven knows Heaven knows

Too Late 04:11
Bury your head beside the truth It's the only way to kill the pain How lost you are, how deeply scarred Standing silent in the rain And it's cold, it's cold It's cold as hell Wrap your arms around yourself Take a bow Walk away No words can save your hollow soul No emotions left to borrow No one can fill that gaping hole No sun will come tomorrow No deals to make at heaven's gate No turning back It's too late Alone at the end and all along Your days were wasted on obsession & pain Don't you wish you knew? It was lost to you And there's no one left to take the blame Adrift between the earth & sky The sun is setting on your life Take a bow Walk away No words can save your hollow soul No emotions left to borrow No one can fill that gaping hole No sun will come tomorrow Oh god, I'm falling Oh god, I'm falling It's too late

I’m a walking mausoleum I’ve organized my grief by numbers Would you like to come inside? Cuz everybody loves to hear A killer misanthropic story It makes you feel more alive And now I’m getting older Colder It only takes one crack in the sky To bring down all the lights So put your head upon my shoulder And slide with me through my own slice of hell I’ve got so many secrets left to tell Time comes on like an avalanche The ones we lose, you can’t get back Most days go by without a snag ‘Til you’re standing in the hallway of your past With the ones you can’t get back There’s a garden on the corner Where I found your dress & cigarettes The ones that you left for me And a feeling runs me over It hits me like the car that almost did The day you had to leave Because time comes on like an avalanche The ones we lose, you can’t get back Most days go by without a snag ‘Til you’re standing in the hallway of your past With the ones you can’t get back Now I hear the bells

Scream 04:03
My desire to remain Is all that I have left As I let go And I don’t wanna play this game But I don’t have a choice I’ve been ripped from my home My flesh & bone So I’ll scream your name With the only breath I have So I’ll scream your name With the only breath I have left My reflection in the glass But I don’t recognize What I see (what’s left of me?) Please don’t leave me with my past My frailties exposed In my last dance There’s one more chance So I’ll scream your name With the only breath I have So I’ll scream your name With the only breath I have left Will my friends be there to greet me around the bend? Will they know my face, lend their grace as I ascend? And Dylan said At the end Wise men know The dark is right See the birds in flight But they burn & rage Burn at the end of the day In rage “Rage, rage against the dying of the light Do not go gentle into that good night” So I’ll scream your name

Ashes 04:17
How many masks can one face hold? How many different lives? It's gotten out of my control 100 pairs of closing eyes Alice falling down her well I'm grasping at the straws One will lead me to myself And one will be the cause Of all of my glittering delusions All my whispers, all my depths And the source of my confusion Is in the secrets that I've kept So I am waiting for the sun To break me I am waiting for the sun To take me I miss the way the colors spill Into the world at dawn And hug the canvas that they fill Received by all with open arms With every year that passes by My memories turn grey Blackened ash in morning light - That's the only way I'll ever escape this long-kiss violence Wasted days in silence Endless Lifeless Fiending Feeding Trapped inside myself So I am waiting for the sun To break me I am waiting for the sun To take me Now he's rising For the last time And just for one moment... I feel alive With sun & skin that bleeds for a dying world Bleeding for the girl I used to know Reaching for the hand I used to hold It's time to go (With sun & skin that bleeds for a dying world Bleeding for the girl I used to know Just let her go Just let her go)

Devour 03:02
I dream of quiet nights in the trees A height they cannot reach And all the sideshow gawkers on the edge of town Could never talk me down They’re burning shadows in the summer heat I see it in my dreams I hear the sound of crickets & the steady drum But I will never run No I will never run Chains & charms devour me It’s my nature to be one Chains & charms devour me It’s my nature to be one It’s my nature Here in the new dawn of a different world I’m just another girl But the subtle culling as the flame grows on The roses, they begin to unfurl We are the tears that hang from your eyes The shame you try to hide What is it Mother that makes our brothers Wanna see us on our knees in the night? Chains & charms devour me It’s my nature to be one Chains & charms devour me It’s my nature to be one I know I’m the culprit But I can’t help it It’s in my flesh & blood Chains & charms devour me It’s my nature to be one It’s my nature

You never feel Time slip through your hands I guess it’s true that your youth is wasted When you’re too young to understand Fast as you can Gotta get away from the light But you can’t escape the sun No matter how fast you run It’s gonna rise So damn blue down to our bones There’s no way for us to know We had it good We had it so good, We had it so good Burning in the night So bright We had it good Just when you think You can’t take any more The waves come crashing down You hear that familiar sound From on the floor So much pain carried in our souls It’s no wonder we didn’t know We had it good, uh-huh We had it so good, We had it so good Burning in the night So bright We had it so good, We had it so good Burning in the night So bright Head the warning Of every morning The world is turning Are you learning? You have it good You have it good

Missed Call 04:16
Dial 3 for the message I planned far ahead The operator’s silence Does it fill you with dread? You always said I think too much Well I guess you were right But this ain’t a conversation, love It’s just one more goodbye Well hello, old friend It’s me again The deck is going under I just have to say when Remember when we drank too much In your living room? Collapsed beneath the weight of lust And all your doom But I don’t blame you for anything Some people they just drift away Never knowing that they’re lost But love’s not a game you can referee Well, it comes and goes And everybody knows That one day you’ll pay the cost My breathing is getting slower now There’s not much left to say I always had too many feelings They always got in my way It’s hard to fill an empty glass It’s even harder to break And if this pain, it wasn’t meant to last Then maybe god made a mistake But I don’t blame you for anything Some people they just drift away Never knowing that they’re lost But love’s not a game you can referee Well, it comes and goes And everybody knows That one day you’ll pay the cost And you’ll pay Oh, you’ll pay Now I’m the memory That haunts you in your sleep You shouldn’t make promises That you can’t keep

about

"Wax Idols' fourth and forthcoming album 'Happy Ending' is an exploration of the abstraction and finality of death from philosophical, political, and personal perspectives. The painting on the cover of a figure mourning is by Oakland artist Lena Gustafson, whose work focuses on what she has described as “how memories are stored in the body.” Fortune says the band picked her to create the art because her work is “post-body, which has a lot to do with what our album is about.”

The dual theme of political anxiety and personal experience is one Fortune began exploring in seriousness on Wax Idols’ third album, 'American Tragic', which Pitchfork proclaimed “smartly unpacks a pretty universal experience—the sadness, nostalgia, and occasional euphoria involved in letting go of something you once cared about, even when it desperately hurts.” 'American Tragic' was reissued in 2017 on the band’s label Etruscan Gold Records. The group also decided to self-release 'Happy Ending' on Etruscan Gold.

Wax Idols’ lineup on this new record is founder and frontperson Hether Fortune (vocals, guitar, bass, organ) with Peter Lightning (guitar, bass, organ, piano), Rachel Travers (drums), and Marisa Prietto (bass, backing vocals). Since the album’s completion, Bay Area musician Greer McGettrick (formerly of The Mallard) has joined the band on bass. Happy Ending was recorded in 2017 at Ruminator Audio in San Francisco, CA and produced by Fortune, Lightning, and Monte Vallier."
